African Union Commission has concluded plan to get .Africa TLD under the umbrella of the ZA Central Registry (ZACR)
In an interview with ZACR representative, Fabrice Djossou, IT News Africa reveals that plans to create a TLD for Africa were formulated as early as 2002, but the first steps to fruition were taken seven years later, in 2009. The actual tender for registering a dot Africa TLD as part of ICANN’s new TLD program was launched eventually in November 2011.
The new TLD will go a long way to promote business, people and cultural ethics of the continent to fruition around the world. Though, there were many ways they previously promote the African culture but with the launching of the new TLD for Africa; the identity will be more pronounced under one entity.
However, there are contrary opinions from many quarters among domainers in respect of the liquidity of the dot Africa TLD in the domain markets. In which many are trying to compare with other ccTLDs launched that were unsuccessful.
To buttress their points; truly, there are only very few countries that are internet oriented in Africa, to mention are Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco and Sudan. Though the numbers of the countries that are highly internet users are few but the numbers of the users are growing very fast even among the up coming nations.
